Beth Am members have not crossed the threshold of our historic Eutaw Place building in months, yet our synagogue doors are open wide. Our talented clergy and staff continue to inspire and support congregants. Our building is a base of operations for food distribution in Central West Baltimore. And our congregation is more deeply involved than ever before in understanding structural racism and the impact we can have in repairing its effects in Baltimore.
As the pandemic reshapes how we gather for worship, community, and tikkun olam, Beth Am’s operations are different but still require substantial financial support. The synagogue depends on the Open Doors Annual Fund for about one-third of the Synagogue’s $1.3-million operating budget.
Most important, gifts to the Open Doors Annual Fund enable Beth Am to keep the synagogue’s doors open to all regardless of means. Beth Am does not turn away anyone for whom paying dues is an obstacle.
Sound stewardship of Beth Am and its finances is crucial during these uncertain times. While the Board has taken a number of steps to reduce staff and operating costs, it is clear that increased revenue through philanthropy and other sources is also essential to preserve the Beth Am experience our members seek and cherish.
This year’s goal for the Open Doors Annual Fund is $400,000, a substantial increase above last year’s, reflecting the need to be fully present for our community during the stresses of the pandemic and continue to stabilize our finances. We recognize that while we are moving through challenging times together, each of us is having a different experience and each of us will support Beth Am differently. Whether your Open Doors Annual Fund gift is $18 or $18,000, you will be part of the sacred work of keeping our doors open wide at a time when so many are seeking community and meaning.
