Byron McKenney Powell Free Community Market

The Byron McKenney Powell Free Community Market at Beth Am Synagogue provides free food to anyone who visits. The market is open every Thursday morning from 7:30am to Noon. The market is a distribution partner of the Maryland Food Bank.

Visitors to the market do not need to provide any identification or information and are only asked to sign in with a first name to keep track of how many visitors we receive.

Items at the market vary from week to week and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A typical week at the market will generally have some of these items, but quantities will vary:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables (apples, oranges, potatoes, onions, etc.)
  • Frozen chicken (halal and non-halal) and meat
  • Fresh eggs
  • Fresh bread
  • Shelf-stable milk
  • Canned tuna and chicken
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned beans
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Oatmeal and grits
  • Vegetable and/or olive oil
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Applesauce
  • Tomato sauce
  • Cereal

The Byron McKenney Powell Free Community Market is named in honor of Byron McKenney-Powell, a Beth Am member who passed away in April 2024 and was passionate about providing food to community members in need. Byron’s mom, Desiree McKenney-Powell, officially dedicated the market at an opening ceremony on August 28, 2025. Read about the opening in the Baltimore Jewish Times.
