Over the years we’ve welcomed numerous honored guests to our historic sanctuary on Yom Kippur afternoon — from an Arab-Israeli diplomat to a constitutional law scholar, Reservoir Hill entrepreneurs, and two local Episcopal priests. This year Rabbi Burg is honored to welcome city councilman and presumptive City Council President Zeke Cohen to the bima for a conversation. The two will discuss Councilman Cohen’s vision for Baltimore City, his passion for social justice, and his proud Jewish heritage.
Zeke Cohen has represented the First District on the Baltimore City Council since 2016 and is now the presumptive City Council President. He is expected to be the first Jewish person to hold this position in over four decades. In July 2019, Zeke introduced the Elijah Cummings Healing City Act, making Baltimore the first city in the country to comprehensively legislate trauma-responsive care. The bill, which was signed into law in February 2020, and the movement that propelled it forward were created to help Baltimore heal from our enduring legacies of trauma, racism and violence. He also sponsored the Gender-Inclusive Single-User Restroom bill and the Transparency in Lobbying Act. Zeke believes in the power of organized communities and in the past two years, his office created community-driven task forces on the topics of transportation and public safety.
Zeke grew up in Northampton, Massachusetts, the son of a social worker and a psychiatrist. Zeke’s belief that “community comes first” was inspired by his mother’s stories of marching for Civil Rights and registering voters during the Mississippi Freedom Summer. After graduating from Goucher College, Zeke taught in West Baltimore and, as a teacher, was awarded the Elizabeth Lawrence Prize for Excellence. He attained a master’s degree in public policy from Johns Hopkins University. Zeke started his nonprofit, The Intersection, to help young people learn community organizing and civic leadership.

Yom Kippur | Saturday, October 12th
One would not expect to speak about Bambi on Yom Kippur, but there are important reasons why we will do that this year. The origin of Bambi is not with the Walt Disney production. “Bambi: A Life in the Woods” is the title of a novel by the Austrian Jewish author, Felix Salten, and was published in 1929. It was not written for children.
In 2022, a new translation was made by Jack Zipes, a professor of German literature and an authority on fairy tales and folk literature. Zipes was convinced, as were scholars before him, that the novel is an allegory about Jewish persecution and was prescient about the Holocaust. The New Yorker titled its review of the new translation: “Bambi Is Even Bleaker Than You Thought.”
The Martyrology will be presented at 2:00 pm, followed by Rabbi Burg’s Open Forum and “At the Break” with Councilman Zeke Cohen.
From dedicated young family services to childcare and Camp Tekiyah, Beth Am has a wide range of opportunities for every family to connect and participate during the High Holy Days and Fall Holidays.
